Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands heavily value sports as it contributes to their social and economic well-being. While the country has participated in the Micronesian Games, they will be hosting their very first games in 2022. Sport is particularly important in Majuro, one of the most densely populated areas in the Pacific, where the majority of the urban population resides. The Marshall Islands, consisting of 29 atolls and 5 islands, heavily rely on US assistance and lease payments for economic stability. The country faces challenges such as population density, limited land and water resources, and the impacts of climate change. Sport and physical activity play a crucial role in addressing issues like youth unemployment, obesity, and non-communicable diseases. The Marshall Islands are actively involved in global climate change discussions and advocate for their region and its challenges. Understanding this context is essential to comprehend the efforts of MINOC and the Marshallese sporting community.
