Kiribati

The Kiribati National Olympic Committee (KNOC) is responsible for overseeing Kiribati athletes' participation in the Micronesian Games. Kiribati has consistently sent teams to the games, with support from the national government. Despite challenges, such as its geographical and economic background as a Least Developed Country (LDC), Kiribati athletes have attended and achieved success in the games. Kiribati, consisting of 32 coral atolls and one raised coral island, was formerly a British protectorate and gained independence in 1979. The country faces health issues like tuberculosis and leprosy, as well as the impacts of climate change, with saltwater inundation and sanitation problems due to its low-lying nature. The economy relies on fishing licenses and remittances from seafarers, as well as foreign aid and drawdowns from the offshore Revenue Equalisation Reserve Fund. Despite these challenges, KNOC strives to promote sport as a catalyst for social and economic development in Kiribati, working alongside the athletes to prepare for the Micronesian Games.
