Nauru

Nauru, a Small Island Development State (SIDS) in the Pacific Ocean, has a rich sporting history with strong performances in athletics and weightlifting at the Micronesian Games. As a member of the Micronesian Games Council, Nauru is preparing to send a contingent to the Majuro 2022 event. Nauru's history includes annexation by Germany in 1888, phosphate mining starting in the early 20th century, and occupation by Australia during World War I. It gained independence in 1968 but faced economic challenges when its phosphate resources depleted in the 1980s. The country's main economic lifeline is now the Australian Regional Processing Centre for asylum seekers since 2012, supplemented by revenue from fishing licenses. Nauru's core challenges include land rehabilitation, climate change, obesity, limited water, non-communicable diseases, and droughts. Despite these challenges, the Nauru National Olympic Committee has produced world-class athletes and continues to promote sport, physical activity, and health, especially among the youth. This background enables Nauru to be an active participant in the Micronesian Games.
